Motivation mountains and molehills

It's amazing how much we talk about motivation everyday; whether it's the motivation to start a task that's been hanging about for a while, or simply the motivation to get up in the morning, motivation is in everything we do. I think you may get drunk quickly if you take a shot for each mention of 'motivation' this week!

No matter how big or small a task may be, if you haven't got the motivation to do it then it suddenly becomes a mountain the size of Everest. Some days we can wake up with all the motivation in the world and get loads done, other days the tank is empty, and that's ok. Where motivation can really start to waver though, is when you have been doing something repeatedly over a long time; the first few maybe great and you feel super motivated to do it, but after a while of doing the same thing over and over it becomes tedious, and getting the umph to do it becomes harder and more draining. This is where I start to realise that there are many different types of motivation, some which is automatic and driven by our natural instincts to survive, some which is driven by love, and some that are driven by ambition (though I'm sure there's many other types too!).

Keeping up your motivation for anything for a long time is hard, as we all have our good and bad days, but usually we are able to pick ourselves back up again eventually, or take a break from it to come back with a fresh take. I feel that motivation is a large factor in long term illness, and it's not really something you can easily just 'take a break from'. Before becoming unwell, I hadn't really given it much thought, but I have now learned that if you're not motivated to get better then you'll likely get stuck, and there are very real world consequences to losing that motivation, or not having it at all. Having spoken with my GP multiple times about this, the same theme comes up in that because I am motivated to get better, then I will get better. This has stuck with me, and on those days where everything is getting on top of me, I try and remember this simple sentiment.

Overall, motivation is a huge factor in how you approach every day life, and for some it is more complicated than others, and their big motivation days may just be that they were able to get up and dressed at a reasonable time, whereas for others it maybe that they finally did that deep clean of the house they have been putting off. What I'm trying to say is, everyone's best and most motivated self looks different, and although it's hard, we should try not to compare ourselves or chastise people for what may appear to be a lack of motivation compared to others.

On that note, I hope anyone who took part in a shot for each mention of today's key theme is now very jolly! Ta ta for now!
